The naming of Nintendo’s next gen console ‘Wii’ has sparked debate amongst gaming fans. Nintendo’s president tells CNN that he has no regrets of the name choice. Also citing that Nintendo has choosen names in the past that were not at first welcomed with open arms.

The GameBoy was one example given, stating that when first announced there was concern if ‘girls’ could actually play the hand-held system. Seems like a funny comment now, but branding is everything and GameBoy proved successful.

The name Wii, pronounced ‘We’, was choosen to encompass a feeling that everyone can have fun. The Wii system focuses on games which are easy to play, fun, and no matter what age group you fit into something can be found ‘fun’ in the system. Helping build this reputation will be the Wii’s controller, which enables players to mimic the swinging of a bat, tennis racket, or other object and it be transferred onto the screen. Yet another controversial move away from classic style controllers.

With controversial names, controllers, and even price Nintendo plans on leading the way amongst Next Gen console sales. Tentatively priced at $250 it is well below the retail price for the Xbox 360 and Play Station 3, slated for release later this year. Time will tell if Nintendo’s plan will be successful.
