Wii on RampageEvery next generation console is bringing to the plate it’s own ‘branded’ game that will make gamers from all over ‘NEED’ that exact system. The Xbox 360 will have Halo 3, the PlayStation 3 will have Final Fantasy, and Nintendo will have Rampage. Not some souped up version, but the original created for the NES and forWii NES Seal under $10 bucks.

According to Nintendo President Saturo Iwata, the classic games, which will be playable via Wii Virtual Console, will all be sold for under $10. He cited specifically that these games would run between $4.50 and $8.99. At these prices Nintendo is betting that Retro Gaming will make a come back and on the Wii.

Nintendo has offered Retro games in the past, specifically for the Nintendo DS. This method seemed to fall short, considering that the prices were set too high and no one wanted to pay to play. Some of the titles went as high as $35 USD but never dropped below the $19.99 mark, consumers just did not want to pay for old NES content.

However, with the Wii broadband capabilities and low prices, Retro gaming is sure to take off. And, becaues I know my NES system bit the dust long ago, I’m looking forward to a nice game of destroying buildings and eating innocent pedestrians.Wii on Rampage

As summarized by arstechnica:

From the picture Iwata is painting, it’s clear that the Wii is designed to profit not only from new games sales but also by working closely with the DS, and placing an emphasis on inexpensive classic games purchased online. It’s hard to underestimate the worth of Nintendo’s back catalogue, and the addition of classic Sega and Turbografx titles adds considerable appeal for gamers who cut their teeth on Nintendo’s early consoles.

Unfortunately, we still don’t know when the Wii will launch or how much it will cost. Iwata said the launch date and final pricing for the Wii will not be announced until September.
