For those of you unfamiliar with the name Shigeru Miyamoto, he is the creator of Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and Nintendos general manager. Recently, The Courier Mail had an interview with this talented game developer and focused on questions regarding the next-gen console Wii.
The interview focuses on Nintendos direction with the Wii and how they plan on reaching out to non-video game players. To Miyamoto the world is divided into two categories, those who play video games and those who do not. His feelings are that the current consoles offered focus on existing video game players and that hte Wii will try to attract the ones who do not.
For years there’s been a separation of people who play video games and then everybody else in the world who doesn’t play video games.
Still standing firm to the fact that the new ‘nunchuck’ style controller will be revolutionary to the gaming experience, Miyamoto states that the Wii will bring in new players to the video game market. Miyamoto said, “We’ve also decided to forget the old style of controller that has been around for so long and instead we’ve decided to go with this completely new interface that will change gaming.”
When approached about the fact that the Wii will not be available in hidefinition, when the new consoles will be, he shrugged the question off noting that most consumers still do not have access to that type of television. Miyamoto feels that the graphics are important to any system, but at this point Nintendo is more focused on the playability aspect rather than worrying about running hi-def. ” We thought it was too soon,” Miyamoto said, “to focus on the high-end graphics.”
The Courier Mail asked probalby the most important question in video gaming history, “In your opinion, what makes a game good?” And Miyamoto responded perfectly, raising this writers expectation of this next gen console.
Two things. Number one, the game allows the player to experience something they’ve never felt before, whether it’s some kind of new experience in the game or new emotion. And number two, that the game be very easy to play and easy to control.
