In a story by GameIndustry.biz, they report that the Nintendo Wii will feature an online marketplace. This marketplace will be very similar to the already online Xbox Live Marketplace for the 360. Taking it’s cue from the online gaming giant Microsoft, the Wii marketplace will feature downloadable content for use on the Wii.
Such a marketplace would enable game developers to extend the life of their product. Buy a Wii game, broadband internet connection, and a credit card will enable you to download new maps, characters, artifacts, etc.. According to Reggie Fils-Aime this project has been in development and hopefully live for the Wii when launched.
This news seems a little contradictory to Nintendo’s announced goal to be a family friendly system. Not ruling out that preteens have access to credit cards, the wii console is quickly becoming expensive for families looking for a quick fix. Couple Wii games being $60 and then further adding a microtransaction marketplace to the batch and the system eats money pretty quick.

The philosophy of paying for addon content is quickly growing amongst game developers, however, is it the best scenario. The gaming community will argue for hours that the additional content should be available for download, for free. Although, they still purchase the content, albeit a little unwilling at first. But hell, who wants to be the only kid on the block without all the map addons?
