Althought he Sports Illustrated for Kids article pointed toward a November launch date, new information suggests that Nintendo may launch the Wii in Sept. This early launch date will enable the Nintendo Wii to get a jump on the competition, ie the PS3.
This Wii early launch rumor has been sparked by reports of Nintendo being in an advanced production stage, gearing up for a large launch. The PS3 is expected to launch on November 17 and with Nintendo already being in production this will allow them to get a headstart making it to the shelves. Will this production technique pay off more than Microsoft’s shortage fiasco?
When Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 late last year the street price was considerably higher than the retail prices. The higher street price was produced from a shortage in production by Microsoft. If Nintendo is already producing final retail units then this will mean that shortages for their next-gen system should not be a concern. This launch technique plays hand in hand with Nintendo’s goal to put a system in every persons living room, for non fanboys will be reluctant to put up with such shortages.
Plenty of demand, lower price, and a revolutionary controller may make the Nintendo Wii the gaming console to have in late 06 and 07. Now, if I could just figure out a place to put that damn light bar for the controller…
