Video games have taken leaps and bounds in the last 10 years, most notably in the graphics area. However, the unsung *cough* heroes of the video game industry are the Music and Sound Designers. Afterall, a great sound is required to pump the 5.1 surround sound systems accompanying most HD televisions in the living rooms today.
The Game Feed was able to get an interview with Frederic Devanlay, whose work can be heard in Tom Clancy Ghost Recon and the upcoming Wii title Red Steel, to name a few.
The interview follows Frederics role in Big Wheels Studios and his intervention in many popular games as a Sound Engineer. One key question that this interview leads to is the fact that the Nintendo Wii is not going to support digital 5.1 sound. When asked if this will hurt the sales of the Nintendo Wii Frederic has a response that is on par with Nintendo’s goal of the console.
No, games [not so long] ago were in stereo. And then this console is [smaller] to be friendlier, thus we shall play [it] during evenings, thus 5.1 is less imperative.
It’s obvious in interviews such as this that Nintendo has got their marketing message across. Their system is aimed at providing a fun enjoyable experience for the whole family, on any setup. Therefore, they shall be no slaves to the HD and 5.1 era, at least just yet.
