The demonstration of the Nintendo Wii at E3 left graphic loving HD elitests wanting more. Nintendo claims that the Wii is 2 times more powerful graphics wise than the GameCube, but where does that put us? Industry insiders said that he actual demonstration model at E3 was running Wii components on GameCube guts.
ATI, the developer of the graphics chip in the Wii(Hollywood), has dodged any questions regarding the specifics of the hollywood chip. John Swinimer, ATI Exec, made the following comment when cornered on the HollyWood specifications.
“I really don’t think that it’s about the [specs]; I think it’s about the innovation that it brings to the table - the motion-sensing, the always-on capability, which is really cool too - the fact that the chip is powerful enough and responsive enough to be there at a moment’s notice. I think that’s pretty cool for the average gamer.”
Is there a reason ATI is being dodgy on the subject of their graphics chip? Afterall, PS3 and XBOX360 was boasting their processing power long before release. Perhaps the Wii should not be compared to the other next generation gaming consoles, it’s in a completely different realm. No HD, no 5.1 surround, just good fun with whacky controllers.
What’s your definition of ‘Next Generation’?
