It wasn’t such a long time ago when you were able to purchase a console system, the game you wanted, and you were done. The ability to play that game completely was entirely held within the confines of the package you picked up at your local electronics store. Those days were grand and 8bit ruled the wooden framed televisions. But, what’s the problem with that scenario of days gone by?

Money flow is the problem, as seen by console and game manufacturers. Once you made your purchase, they no longer had a way to take more money out of your pocket. The alternative was that they develop more and better games for you to purchase, subsquently each release was also self contained. There was no need to update, fix bugs, or worry about expandable content. Enter highspeed internet.

Highspeed Internet and consoles go hand in hand, it’s no longer a necessary evil for the PC, but also consoles. Micrsoft, a pioneer of online gaming, seems to have the perfect system in place. Allowing for easy access to online foes and as of late, downloadable content. But nothing comes free and subscriptions are an easy way to keep money flowing. Not that the PS2 didn’t have an online system, but severely flawed, was not nearly successful. Enter Next-Gen systems.
The Xbox 360 is already out and an online marketplace is the only way you can play a ‘complete’ game. Developers are continually producing a product, based on the same code(development), for download via the marketplace. In many cases, these ‘add-ons’ cost money and further drain a gamers wallet. Enter Big Business.

Is big business killing quality gaming? Afterall, it seems that game after game is only half-done and full of bugs. The titles are being rushed to store shelves with the developers knowing they can just release a bug patch and everyone will be happy, but are we?
