It’s typical of console developers to ship out development kits to third-party manufacturers. This is done to help create the largest game and accessory base possible for the system. Afterall, a gaming console is nothing without it’s add-on toys and games.
Today, Kotaku reported that some very small developers received a package from Nintendo. This package was not expected by anyone at the business and it’s contents were not made aware until opened. Much to the surprise of the studio in question, there was a Nintendo Wii Dev-Kit waiting inside.
It’s stressed that this is only a rumor for now, but is not entirely out of the question. Especially since the Wii is reportedly launching 4th quarter of 06.
In addition, there were many developers that were caught off guard by the prelaunch success of the Nintendo Wii. After the enthusiastic response at E3 many game developers were scrambling to start developiong games for this upcoming system. Hopefully if this rumor proves to be true, more wii game manufacturers will get on the ball, so our Christmas stalkings won’t be left empty.
