The Wii Graphic Rumor

Keeping up with Wii rumors has been a full time job, almost since it was announced to be the Revolution. Since that day, any idea, conspiracy under the sun has surfaced as “factual” information somewhere on the web. Quite possibly the rumor that has perpetuated the most is about the graphic chip on the Wii, codename HollyWood.

The course of events from the announcement of the Revolution, all the way to Leipzig last week, we have seen screen shots and talk of lackluster graphics for the console. The wii does not have bad graphics, or even subpar, just weaker in terms of the next-gen consoles. Nintendo has made it quite clear on a number of occasions that this was done purposefully, since their goal was to create a fun system, not one that required a HD television. Not to be the first system on the TV stand, but the second in every home!

Whether the rumor was started by upset Nintendo fanboys or an industry insider, no one knows for sure. However, this Wii rumor has resurfaced again at Joystiq.com. The article names a french gaming blog which suggests that the true power of the Wii graphics will be announced on Sept. 14th. The blog goes on to say that downplaying the Wii’s graphics capabilities was done to create a buzz closer to launch time, give the media some bait to run with.

I suppose we’ll have to wait until launch time to know who is really in the dark. Long live 8bit!
