In June of 2011, at the annual E3 Expo, Nintendo introduced the newest console in their lineup of gaming products and software: the Wii U. One of the biggest differences that was immediately available is the new controller. The original utilizes wii-motes, which are remote controls that are wireless and were considered to be revolutionary when they were released. The new controller looks absolutely nothing like the original controller, and it is something that is confusing many people. How does the new controller work and what will it allow you to do that the current controller doesn’t?

The New Release

The newest controller is extremely different from the much-loved remotes of the previous release. It has more of a classic feel to it, in that it is to be held in both hands and has the traditional buttons on it, but right in the middle of the controller it has a 6.2 inch touch screen. It is this touch screen that is so different from traditional controllers. In fact the last joystick to have anything similar went with the Sony Dreamcast, but it was nowhere near as high tech and as unique as this new choice is. The touch screen itself is not new to this brand. They released touch screen capability when they released their DS, which has a bottom screen that can be touched to play games. But adding the touch screen with a new, large system is definitely something that has not been done successfully before, and if anyone can pull it off, experts say that it’s this company.

There will be many people who will buy Nintedo Wii U console products simply because they looks so different, without actually realizing how the new controller will truly change the way they game. When it unveiled the new system, the company showed how the new controller can do so much more than traditional ones can allow you to do. You can, for instance, use the touch pad to get things from your controller to the television during a game, like shooting an arrow or a ninja throwing star. You can point it at the television as well to see a whole different world on the screen – for instance if you point the controller at the screen during a shooting game you may be able to turn your gun into one that has serious scope action, giving you a definite advantage in the game.

Outside of Gaming

But what may surprise most people, and one reason why so many will buy Nintendo Wii U console products, is that there are many uses for the controller outside of playing it directly with the console. One example the company is showcasing is that you can transfer games you’re playing from the television to the new controller. If, for instance, your child is playing a Mario game on the television and you’re ready to watch something else, you can have them transfer their game from the television directly to the controller, so that no one has to argue over who has television time. Most shocking, however, is the fact that you can video conference with the new controller. This will allow families to stay in contact with each other even if they don’t have a webcam on their computer, which is definitely something that no one expected from this company.
