Wiimote Concerns

It seems that production has ran into problems with the Wiimote control for the Nintendo Wii. If this speculation is true, then this may be the reason Nintendo has not announced an official launch date.

According to GoNintend.com, this is what their source had to say:

“The factory has received a purchasing order for the Wii controller and a sample, but is still stuck in the testing phase. From the feedback of testers, currently the Wiimote and nunchuck still have a lot of small issues, such as buttons that aren’t sensitive, and that it’s hard to press two buttons together, (there’s even no response occasionally), and that the current sample is easily damaged – using the controller in normal situation will produce some noise, etc. Entering September, if the above hardware problems cannot be fixed, it will directly affect Wii’s selling strategy.

Also, the factory has not received the Wii console from Nintendo yet – currently, they are testing samples using a dedicated machine only for testing, which means that after an up-to-standard sample is produced, it still needs to be sent back to Japan to be tested by Nintendo for a second time. The Wii controller uses bluetooth technology for real-time data transfer, and infrared for “space location”, and the second phase of testing procedures maybe even tougher!”

Again, it’s possible this is nothing more than another Wii rumor. However, this could explain a lot of things, such as no launch date and delayed wii parties.

The Wii Graphic Rumor

Keeping up with Wii rumors has been a full time job, almost since it was announced to be the Revolution. Since that day, any idea, conspiracy under the sun has surfaced as “factual” information somewhere on the web. Quite possibly the rumor that has perpetuated the most is about the graphic chip on the Wii, codename HollyWood.

The course of events from the announcement of the Revolution, all the way to Leipzig last week, we have seen screen shots and talk of lackluster graphics for the console. The wii does not have bad graphics, or even subpar, just weaker in terms of the next-gen consoles. Nintendo has made it quite clear on a number of occasions that this was done purposefully, since their goal was to create a fun system, not one that required a HD television. Not to be the first system on the TV stand, but the second in every home!

Whether the rumor was started by upset Nintendo fanboys or an industry insider, no one knows for sure. However, this Wii rumor has resurfaced again at Joystiq.com. The article names a french gaming blog which suggests that the true power of the Wii graphics will be announced on Sept. 14th. The blog goes on to say that downplaying the Wii’s graphics capabilities was done to create a buzz closer to launch time, give the media some bait to run with.

I suppose we’ll have to wait until launch time to know who is really in the dark. Long live 8bit!

Wii Games Lacking Features?

According to Aussie-Nintendo.com, the leading Nintendo news site for Australia, 3rd party titles for the Wii will be lacking big time in the features department. Apparently, Nintendo has left the game developers in the dark, therefore they are unable to develop games that can be unique to the system. These findings are contrary to what has already been announced and other details.

For example, Aussie-Nintendo claims that there will likely be no online-enabled games for the Wii at launch time. They name two Wii games as specific examples, Tony Hawk Downhill Jam and Call of Duty III. However, Cubed3.com, a major Nintendo news source claims that Call of Duth III will feature 16 online multiplayer mayhem. But multiplayer capabilities isn’t the only feature being left out of 1st gen Wii games…

The wii-mote speaker is said to be another feature that games will not immediately take advantage of. This speaker used to build sound depth to games, may only be utilized by Nintendo developed games and Red Steel maker Ubisoft. Even Pro-G, a UK gaming site, mentions a hands-on experience with Red Steel, stating that it’s a “first step” in what the Wii will offer.

The negative news surrounding the Nintendo Wii is few and far between, but hits close to home with avid fans. Consider what gamers are most excited about for the Wii and what’s been mentioned here. If Wii games are utilizing the Wii to it’s potential at launch, will we be left with a half-developed overhyped console? There is still time for Wii developers to fine tune their product, so hopefully we can all believe the hype.

Sept. 14th Wii Rumor

According to the Nintendo gaming site Cubed, Nintendo of America has invited Matt of IGN Wii to an exclusive event on Sept. 14th. Like every Wii rumor before it, it’s based on pure speculation that an announcement in regards to launch date and price will be made.

It is also of note that Sept 14th was also the date that Microsoft announced the launch of the Xbox 360. Peculiar, coincidental, or more rumors that will not pan out. What’s worse is that all the major news outlets are announcing the PRICE of the Nintendo Wii. Consider all the info you read false or based on speculation, no official announcement has been made by Nintendo…yet.

Resident Evil Wii Game

Wii Resident EvilDuring the Leipzig convention, there were several announcements related to Nintendo, but not what we were expecting. In addition to console developers there were also a number of game developers that made their pressence known and were nice enough to do some candid interviews. One such interview was between Capcom and Pro-G.uk, where the fate of the Resident Evil series and the Wii were discussed.

“Takeuchi also went all uncomfortable and apologetic when we asked him about Resident Evil Wii, saying he didn’t know if there would be one. Although when we put our puppy-dog eyes on, he did at least concede that there might be a teensy chance of seeing such a game,”

It’s been suggested by a number of sources that Takeuchi misunderstood the question. The upcoming Resident Evil 5 is slated to be released on the PS3 and Xbox360, not the Wii. Therefore, the chances of this title being released to the Nintendo system is unlikely and probably what Takeuchi thought he was being asked about.

There is still hope for a Resident Evil game for the Wii, we might just have to wait awhile after launch for it. Meanwhile, there are a few horror Wii games being discussed for launch status. One such  Wii horror title is Sadness, which we discussed back in July.

Wii for Under $200

Wii Price PointNintendo has been reluctant to announce a specific price point for their upcoming console, the Wii. However, despite Nintendo’s reluctance to give up information has not kept industry analysts and “experts” from guessing at the price. The latest price prediction comes from EA games Vice President David Gardner.

Gardner predicts that the Wii will be sold in North America for $170, well below the standing low prediction of $250. David felt this fell into Nintendo’s plan to be the ‘second’ system customers buy, the first being a PS3 or Xbox 360. If it’s true, this places the much anticipated console at only $40 more than their handheld DS Lite system.

Although a low-ball estimate on Wii pricing, Gardner wasn’t the only to predict prices below the $250 mark. Tokyo accountant group Nikko has also predicted the launch price of Wii to be around the 90 lb mark. :)

N64 & GameCube Games Ported to Wii

The latest Wii rumor is that there will be a strong following of N64 games ported to the Nintendo Wii. According to the gaming magazine Nintendo Dream in Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto suggested that Nintendo was considering revamping a number of their old platform games and adapting them to the next-gen wii.

At E3 we were introduced to a revamped Mario 64, which was obviously running at a higher frame rate. However, the real changes as with the rest of the Wii, is the way the games are controlled. Miyamoto suggests the idea that Nintendo is encouraging GameCube game developers to port titles as well.

“The machine is based on GC… We’ll be upgrading the development tools, but GameCube code can be used for the most part as is. In that sense, I believe that it would be good to remake GameCube games for Wii, and that some titles would become better with the change to the Wii remote controller.”

It’s still unclear as to how many of the old games will be ported to the Wii. In addition, whether these games will be standalone or through the Wii Online marketplace has yet to be determined.

Wii Voice Recognition

As the dog days of summer set in, the frequency of Wii rumors slow, and anticipation sets in. However, a few days ago Igniq.com fueled a rumor fire that the Wii would launch with voice recognition capabilities.

The basis for this rumor falls on Nintendo applying for a patent almost 2 full years ago. The patent covered technology that enabled voice to text, detected loudness, and had several color combinations. The Nintendo DS already comes enabled with a limited amount of voice recognition software, perhaps the Wii intends to take it further.

Super Secret Wii Party

Wii PartyWhat good is a hyped up system if a few parties aren’t thrown in it’s honor, but hush-hush style. Nintendo plasn to throw a few Wii parties Mission Impossible style to keep the buzz going and gaming site Kotaku has the latest.

Wii Ambassadors, as they are called, are aware of a date, but not of the meeting place. The evening of the party they will be contacted via phone, of an empty parking lot to meet. Once the party goers arrive they will be loaded into a bus and trucked to the Wii party palace.

Exciting for those involved and even better for us bloggers that are looking for the latest Wii rumors.
