Spore coming to Wii?

While a lot of people are actively wondering where EA’s sprawling Spore won’t turn up, we can tell you where it is likely to appear: on the Wii!

Will Wright wants to turn Spore into a franchise powerhouse; we all know what happened with The Sims. With the evolutionary sim, however, Wright intends to focus on the differences of each platform, and he’s pointing specifcally to the Wii. Or should that be with the Wii … mote?

In comments this week, Wright let two very telling details drop. First, he lauded the Wii in its creative potential, mentioning specifically the controller (of course). He went on the decry the lack of a mouse for consoles, pointing out that this was something of a limiting factor when dealing with games for both the PC and consoles. The Wiimote, however, can point and click with the best of them. We’re betting that we’ll be getting ready to guide our own species next year on the Wii.

Wii Development Kits, Shipped

It’s typical of console developers to ship out development kits to third-party manufacturers. This is done to help create the largest game and accessory base possible for the system. Afterall, a gaming console is nothing without it’s add-on toys and games.

Today, Kotaku reported that some very small developers received a package from Nintendo. This package was not expected by anyone at the business and it’s contents were not made aware until opened. Much to the surprise of the studio in question, there was a Nintendo Wii Dev-Kit waiting inside.

It’s stressed that this is only a rumor for now, but is not entirely out of the question. Especially since the Wii is reportedly launching 4th quarter of 06.

In addition, there were many developers that were caught off guard by the prelaunch success of the Nintendo Wii. After the enthusiastic response at E3 many game developers were scrambling to start developiong games for this upcoming system. Hopefully if this rumor proves to be true, more wii game manufacturers will get on the ball, so our Christmas stalkings won’t be left empty.

The Console Money Pit

It wasn’t such a long time ago when you were able to purchase a console system, the game you wanted, and you were done. The ability to play that game completely was entirely held within the confines of the package you picked up at your local electronics store. Those days were grand and 8bit ruled the wooden framed televisions. But, what’s the problem with that scenario of days gone by?

Money flow is the problem, as seen by console and game manufacturers. Once you made your purchase, they no longer had a way to take more money out of your pocket. The alternative was that they develop more and better games for you to purchase, subsquently each release was also self contained. There was no need to update, fix bugs, or worry about expandable content. Enter highspeed internet.
